The Scent Question: Why I Only Use Essential Oils
Share
Scent is personal. One person's favourite smell is another person's headache — literally. So it's worth knowing what's actually making your soap smell the way it does, because not all scent is made the same way.
Fragrance oils vs. essential oils. Fragrance oils are made in a lab. They're synthetic blends designed to mimic a smell — "ocean breeze," "fresh linen" — and a single fragrance oil can contain dozens of chemical compounds that never have to be listed on a label. Essential oils are distilled or cold-pressed directly from plants — lavender flowers, eucalyptus leaves, citrus peel. What you smell is the plant itself, nothing invented.
I only use essential oils in my soap. I want to know exactly what's in every bar, and I want it to come from a plant, not a lab.
Why essential oil scent fades faster. This is the trade-off, and I'd rather be honest about it. Essential oils are made of small, volatile molecules — volatile just means they evaporate easily, which is exactly why you can smell them in the first place. In cold process soap, they go through a lot: the lye used in saponification breaks down some of the scent compounds, and then the bar sits curing for 4–6 weeks with air moving over it, which lets more of the scent evaporate. By the time a bar reaches you, the scent is gentler than it was on pour day, and it keeps softening with use. Fragrance oils last longer because they're engineered to — heavier synthetic molecules, plus fixatives designed to hold the scent in place through all of that. The staying power is the point of them. For me, it's not worth the trade.
Scent sensitivity is real, and so is migraine. I know this firsthand — I have migraine, and scent is a genuine trigger for me. From my own experience, synthetic fragrances bother me far more than essential oils do. The lab-made intensity — strong, persistent, hard to get away from — is what my head can't tolerate. Essential oils don't affect me the same way. They're lighter, they fade, and they don't hang in the air the same way.
That said, sensitivity varies a lot from person to person, and some people react to essential oils too. There's no universal answer — only what works for your body.
My soaps are mildly scented — or unscented. That's deliberate. A light scent that you notice in the shower and that doesn't linger on your skin all day. If you're scent-sensitive, my unscented bars are always an option, and my scented ones are kept mild on purpose.
Scent should make your day a little nicer, never harder. That's the thinking behind every bar I make.
