How to Make Your Handmade Soap Last Longer

There's one thing that makes handmade soap disappear faster than anything else, and it isn't how often you wash your hands. It's water — specifically, water that never leaves.

A cold process bar is different from the soap you're used to. It still contains the natural glycerin created during saponification (most commercial makers remove it and sell it separately), which is wonderful for your skin but means the bar softens if it sits in a puddle. The fix is simple: let it dry.

Give it a dish with drainage. A slatted wooden dish or a soap lift lets air circulate underneath. A flat dish that holds water will melt your bar from below — this one change alone can double a bar's life.

Keep it out of the direct shower stream. Park it on a shelf or ledge away from running water. It only needs to get wet when you do.

Use one bar at a time. I know, the temptation to have three going at once is real. But a bar that's always damp never hardens back up.

Store your spares somewhere dry and lovely. An unused bar kept in a linen closet or dresser drawer will keep for months — and everything around it will smell faintly wonderful.

A well-kept bar of Awaken or Restore should last a good 3–4 weeks of daily showers. Treat it kindly and it'll return the favour.
